Our programs follow SAMHSA’s Six Key Principles of a Trauma-Informed Approach which also align with best practices for creative youth development:
1. Safety - AWE’s programming supports and builds a safe, accessible, and inclusive environment- physically and emotionally.
2. Trustworthiness and Transparency - AWE’s teaching methods and approach prioritize authentic communication and relationship-building between artists and participants.
3. Peer support & Collaboration - We work diligently to establish and build partnerships between AWE and community groups through collaboration, consensus building, and mutually benefitial activities.
5. Empowerment, voice and choice - We believe that youth-driven art making, helps them develop their voice and dignity. We celebrate and acknowledge each individual’s contribution.
6. Cultural, Historical, and Gender Issues- AWE is committed to being culturally responsive across all areas of our work.
Art-making is a successful route to building resilience, which is critical when addressing and healing from the impact of trauma.
